HOLY GRAIL PRODUCTS

GARNIER FRUCTIS VOLUME EXTEND INSTANT BODIFIER DRY SHAMPOO: I just realized what a long name that is for a product. This is my secret weapon to how I can forgo a hair wash for four days. :) I don't like to wash my hair daily because it tends to dry out quickly (especially in this winter), so this product does wonders to keep my hair looking and feeling fresh for days. And my hair actually tends to look BETTER and receive more compliments on the third or fourth day without a wash. I've tried a variety of different dry shampoos before, drug store and salon, and they've always given my hair an odd scent, white residue, and costed a pretty penny. I like that Garnier is affordable, I can usually pick up a bottle of these for about $4 from a Walmart or Target. The only CON I really have about this is that as you get towards the bottom of the bottle, the product tends to dry white, so you either have to shake it really hard before spraying, or dab some water on your head.

MOROCCON OIL: I've been curling my hair a lot lately which is damaging my ends and giving it a really dull, dry appearance. So I recently added Moroccon oil into the routine a few months ago, and it has drastically improved the appearance of my hair. The oil locks in the moisture and gives it a nice shine. I just pour a dime-sized amount in my hand, rub in my hands, and comb it into my hair, transferring the product onto my strands. A little goes a long way this product. If you go too crazy, your hair can just look greasy, if you do it right, your hair will look brand new.

LOREAL SLEEK IT STRAND SMOOTHER SERUM-SPRAY: So this is the newest product of the bunch and I've only been using it for a few months now. I originally picked it up at a Target because it was inexpensive ($3) and wanted to try some preventative care with all the heat I was using. It also is supposed to help with humidity, frizz, shine, and silky texture. So I like that it works to do multiple things in one spray.

For my face, I use one face wash, one serum, and one moisturizer daily. I'm pretty lazy and don't like to take too long getting ready for bed or getting ready in the morning, so the less products I have to use, the better. Which is why I'm really happy about the three products I use now, because they really work without too much effort on my part.

PETER THOMAS ROTH GLYCOLIC ACID 10 PERCENT HYDRATING GEL: If I could have one face product for the rest of my life, it would be this—I cannot say enough good things about this it. I first discovered it after With Love, Ellyse included it in one of her "Favorite Products" posts last year, and I purchased it because I had a Sephora gift card. The price point is steep on this one (around $40) and I was skeptical at first, but now I am sold. This product consistently improves the texture and tone of my skin with each use. I have sensitive, acne-prone, and scarred skin, but the gel really aids all of it. I also find the price to be justifiable because not only does it deliver results, it lasts a long time. I am still on my first bottle which I bought back in August, use it day and night, and am just about to run out. So it can last you around 6 months!

CLEAN AND CLEAR OIL-FREE DUAL ACTION MOISTURIZER: I actually started using this product a year ago when I found it in my boyfriend's brother's bathroom. I needed to borrow lotion after the gym, so I tried it and I couldn't stop touching my face throughout the day. The lotion absorbed so quickly into my skin but it was strong enough to actually leave my skin feeling moisturized and soft. I also liked that it gave my skin a tingly, minty feel because it was refreshing. Sometimes I feel like the "good" lotions are perfumed, thick, or greasy, which are all things I really don't like, so I enjoy that this product seems to work but is so light-weight.

NEUTROGENA OIL-FREE ACNE STRESS CONTROL POWER-CREAM WASH (OR POWER-CLEAR SCRUB): I used to have frequent mild breakouts or at least a few bumps on my face at all times, but ever since I've used this face wash they've kept all acne at bay. The only times I really ever break out now are when I sleep without washing my makeup off or travel so my skin is adjusting to the water/pollution change. So I put cream/scrub both down cause I've tried both, and they're a bit different. I used to use the scrub for over a year, and I loved that it was reliable and exfoliated my skin, but because my skin was also sensitive, it always left my face a little red. I had to be very gentle when I used it in the morning because I didn't know how long it would take for the redness to fade away. I kept using it, though, because it literally prevented acne from emerging and healed ones that formed. In December, I noticed they had a cream in the same line, so I tried that one and I think I like it more because it is so gentle on my skin. I love the creaminess of it and it leaves my skin feeling buttery soft. I think I'd like to buy both and alternate using them, because I don't think the cream exfoliates as well as the scrub did.

And that's it for my favorite beauty products. :) I tried really hard to be concise (clearly it didn't work), but I just got really excited talking about these products because they've worked so well for me and want others to try them, too. So let me know if you have used these or plan on using them! I'd love to hear about it. :)

MONDAY'S MEMO : A WEEK IN NYC (PART 1)

Monday, February 24, 2014

Happy Monday!
Since Mondays are the day I am dedicating to speak on all things professional, I thought I'd wait til today to share about my NYC trip!

I was in NYC for four days, will all expenses paid for through the American Advertising Federation (AAF). I mentioned it briefly here, but I was nominated as one of the 50 Most Promising Minority Students (MPMS) of 2014 in the country.
The intent of MPMS is to "help the workforce better reflect the multiculturalism of today's society by connecting the industry with the nation's top minority students." So, AAF sent us to NYC for a week of networking, interviewing, and industry immersion opportunities with industry professionals/companies. (taken from website.)
Prior to, I didn't really understand what would happen during the trip and didn't anticipate too much to since it was only four days long. But boy, was I so, so, so wrong. I learned, I networked, and I was inspired. What more could I ask for? It was exhausting with how much activity we did in such a short amount of time and the amount of information we were supposed to digest, but each night I went to bed fulfilled and excited. These people are so, so, so passionate with their trade—and that's honestly all I'm looking for. That's what gets my heart beating. It excites me to know that one day I'll work alongside such people. (:

While I was there, I had the chance to interview with 6 companies total; McCann, BBDO, Initiative, Hill Holiday, Wieden + Kennedy, and General Mills, along with a handful of informal interviews. The rest of the agenda was blocked for seminars and workshops addressing relevant topics like leadership types, confidence skills, diversity, women in the workplace, etc. Different companies also held Q&A panels and agency tours, so we could get a better peek into the working life. It was so great.

Here are some memorable quotes from the trip to leave you with...

"You're too smart to just be average at something."

"Do one thing a day that scares you."

"Don't just network, build relationships."

"Be curious."

:)

I know I'm fortunate to have found a career that really excites me; and I know not all people want or need to be fulfilled with their career—and that's fine. (: To each their own. But I hope that wherever you are sitting, I hope this week you will strive to find more joy in your work today than yesterday. Work doesn't have to be your life or even a large chunk of it, but you CAN make 9 to 5 count. Seek another project that excites you. Ask your co-workers out for coffee. Hang a pretty poster in your office. Do anything and everything to make it count.

HELLO, HELLO.

I'm alive! :)
Happy (belated) Valentine's Day, friends!

I hope my dear friends Ellyse, Ella, Megan, Amy, and Kiki kept you company while I was away! Weren't they great? If you aren't already, find some time to make your way over to their blog cause they are constantly spitting out good stuff. And then, press that follow button—you won't regret it. (;

New York was an absolute BLAST and I can't wait to share the entirety of it with you guys, but right now I'm just trying to catch up on my school work, relationships, sleep, and not to mention tv shows. (House of Cards 2 came out last week. Anyone else on that yet?) But I promise I'll be here reeeal soon. Thank you everyone for your sweet words + prayers throughout my trip! I appreciated every single one, for real. Updates to come on my job search status!

Til then, hope you all have yourselves a WONDERFUL hump day! It's warm (well, 30-degrees-kinda-warm) and sunny where I am (sup, chicago), and I've started my day with morning prayer + Caribou coffee + inbox sorting. My kinda morning! :)

GUEST POST: IN ITS TME

Saturday, February 15, 2014

Hello, Coffee and Honeycomb readers! I am so excited to be taking over Jenny's blog today. Jenny is one amazing soul and friend to me. She's full of encouragement, wisdom, and love and that's something I hope to be each and every day. But you knew that already, didn't you?

It's friendships like these that make me grateful for the blogging community. Because it really and truly is a community. One of the greatest lessons I've learned from blogging is the importance of being honest, open, and raw with your readers. While it's the hardest kind of post to write (can I get an amen?), it's also one of the most rewarding. These kinds of posts really open the door to friendships. They let you readers see you for who you really are, as a real human, and a relatable person. Plus, as a writer, they also help me process my emotions and deepen my faith, too. They let me get things out, help me admit my fears, help me process the events in my life, and help me realize how much what I need to work on. So if you ask me, it's a win-win situation. But it's a lot easier said than done, right? And that's why I'm here today. I'm here to encourage you to share your heart. I'm not pushing you to reveal your deepest darkest secrets (privacy is also important!) but I am encouraging you to be honest with your readers and friends. Be honest, be open, and be ready for all of the love that you'll receive. Be ready friends, because love is on its way. That said, Happy Valentine's Day! I promise I had no intention of writing a post like this with such crazy timing. I guess you could say love is in the air (and so are my terrible cliches and puns…). Thanks again for having me, Jenny!

GUEST POST: PAPER UMBRELLA

Friday, February 14, 2014

Hello there! Ella here from Paper Umbrella. When Jennifer asked me to do a guest post this week I knew I had to do something related to Valentine’s Day! I don’t usually do nail art posts, but I was inspired to come up with a few subtle nail designs for those of us who want to celebrate the day of love without being too over the top. Here are a couple of easy ideas to inspire you!
Red & Pink:
This one is a little more on the traditional side, and a little more time consuming than the design below. Start with your first color and paint your whole nail. Wait for this layer to dry. Take two pieces of tape and tape off the part you don’t want to paint over (see pictures). Paint on your next color. Wait for this layer to dry, take off the tape carefully, put on your next layer of tape, and paint on your next color. Wait for the paint to dry, remove the tape, and that’s it!
Glitter Heart:
Paint your nails a solid color. I chose something a little unconventional for Valentines Day – as much as I love pink, sometimes I like to stray from the traditional holiday colors. Make sure you let your nails dry really well. Now, take a small piece of tape, fold it in half, cut out a little heart, and unfold it. Stick the tape on your nail, making sure the edges are fully stuck to your nails. For this part, you can use either glitter nail polish or clear polish and some glitter. If you are using glitter, pour some out, and mix a little bit of clear polish with it. Make sure you haven’t picked up any huge chunks of glitter, and then paint a layer onto your nail. Wait for the polish to dry completely (seriously, be patient or you’re gonna ruin it!). Carefully take off the tape and you’re done!

There are lots of fun ideas to try around the internet for simple nail art, especially when it comes to Valentine’s Day themed nails! I would also like to try doing a French manicure with a glitter tip (maybe over red polish?) or experiment with this technique. I hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day, whether you're spending it with someone special, going out with your single girlfriends, or staying in with Misters Ben & Jerry ;) I'd say any of those merit some pretty, love themed nails!

GUEST POST: WITH LOVE, ELLYSE

Thursday, February 13, 2014

Hey there! I was so excited when Jenny reached out to me to look after her little corner of the web while she’s away impressing huge advertisers and having an amazing time in NYC! My name is Ellyse and I blog at With Love, Ellyse. I cover anything that crosses my mind, but for the most part, I focus on fashion, beauty and lifestyle.

Jenny has been putting up with me since the day we met in Yearbook class junior year of high school. It wasn’t long before we realized that we shared a love for strangely flavored pretzels (spicy buffalo, anyone?) and sarcasm. Needless to say, we’ve been friends ever since!

Today I wanted to share with you the perfect Valentine’s Day outfit. I’ve already posted about some of my favorite gifts and my overall love of pink and sparkles, but I thought I would touch a little bit on the fashion of the holiday. Whether you’re fine dining or having a rom-com movie marathon, you can still show your holiday spirit.

GUEST POST: TAKING STEPS HOME

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

hello coffee + honeycomb readers!
i am so incredibly psyched to be invading jenny's space today. :)
she has been a true treasure in this blog world.
i'm constantly inspired and awed by her heart-felt words and fun internet finds.
it's always a blessing to come across genuine people - and jenny is one of them!

>>>><<<<

i'm amy and i blog over at taking steps home.
i ramble on about anything from faith, what things i'm crushing on etsy, fiction, and many other random things - isn't that what blogging is about? embracing the random. i think so.

>>>><<<<

today i wanted to share with you a recent DIY.
spring is right around the corner (once y'all northern folk's dig out of the snow!) which means PLENTY of bridal showers and bachelorette parties - am i right?
hosting parties can go one of two ways: incredibly fun or incredibly stressful.
really the tone is all up to you - the hostess.
:) so no pressure.

i feel like with pinterest, etsy, and the like there are so many incredibly options for invitations.
but what if you're running low on time and money?
you have to get creative.
so lets start this journey shall we?

what you will need:

+ blank invitation set (i got 50 invitation/envelopes from target for $10)
+ glue (or a glue stick)
+ paint brush (optional, if you have a glue stick sweet, if not your finger could work too!)
+ glitter
+ a good pen

how to:

+ look through pinterest/etsy and find an invitation that you like - or multiple ones to pull ideas from.
+ brush some glue on the top of the invitation
+ douse that junk in glitter
+ let dry
+ optional: sketch out your design with a pencil first if you're nervous
+ write out the invitation.
+ WALLAH! you're done!

see...so easy.
:)
now you can have some confidence to make your own invitations!
and if you're worried about your handwriting - practice helps!
i am no pro when it comes to nice looking handwriting, i just do my best to not stress over perfection and while i'm watching tv doodle away. :)
it doesn't have to be perfect - just made with love!

MONDAY'S MEMO: HELLO NYC!

Monday, February 10, 2014

The week has finally arrived and I'm heading up to NYC for the AAF's Most Promising Minority Student Conference. It's going to be one amazing, chaotic, and life-changing week. A jam-packed itinerary is planned for every day of the week, and one of them is strictly reserved for interviews. Yes, eight hours of interviewing. Fifty (!!!) companies from around the country, and from all sorts of disciplines, will be there (Like CNN, Conde Naste, Razorfish, and Leo Burnett, just to name a few...) It's time to pull out the big guns. So far, I've revised, revised, and revised my resume, printed out 50+ copies, and ordered business cards.

I'm still doing some interview prep + researching. If you're curious on exactly HOW to interview prep, here are some things I do:
- Research the company: annual reports, CEOs, recruiters, etc.
- Research the industry landscape: healthy, climate, trends, etc.
- Research the work the company has been cranking out.
- Research common interview questions and type up answers
- Prepare stories and experiences to highlight (in the form of STAR: situation, task, action, result)
- Prepare questions to ask.
- Prepare a 30-second thank you speech.

The internet is a beautiful thing for times like this. :)

So with all this madness going on, I won't be able to really dedicate time into blogging as I'd like to! :( I will be MIA for the week; however, I am leaving you in good hands! :) I asked some of my favorite blog friends to join Coffee & Honeycomb while I'm gone, and they have graciously accepted. These are some truly WONDERFUL ladies and I'm so excited for you to meet them. So keep checking back here during the week and be ready for new faces and new content.

*Follow me to NYC by following me on Instagram (@jkfacee) if you aren't already! :)

BURNING THE MIDNIGHT OIL.

Thursday, February 6, 2014

This is the third consecutive night I've stayed up past 3 a.m. but I can't even complain because it makes me feel alive (cliche?). I've never felt so invested and attracted to a project before and it feels stinking good.

If you follow me on any of my social media platforms, then you probably know what this is regarding. (I also apologize for the overload of updates, hehe. But I hope it does nothing but brighten your day.) Once the #TENDAYSOFLOVE initiative launched, I went in full throttle. I believe whole-heartedly in this project and am pouring 100% of myself into it. From planning to designing all the visuals to reaching out to potential partners and overseeing executions, I would be lying if it I said it wasn't time-consuming... It has literally been taking chunks and chunks out of my day, not to mention brain power... but I want to give it my best. My thoughts just naturally start drifting in that space now. No room for half-butting.

My classes are on the back burner right now, but PTL that I am only a part-time student this semester and have the time to do something like this! I am even considering taking all of my classes for credit only so that I can focus on more individual ventures without worrying about it affecting my GPA. We'll see about that—I'm still not sure if that is the smartest decision. A majority of my classes are core major classes, so the content is interesting and something I should be learning anyway.

I am seriously living and breathing these quotes right now.
I hope one day this means something to you, too.
